There are many terms used to describe the various types of schools in the UK, from private school and grammar school. It can be hard to keep track of which one is which, and what the differences are.
Understanding the differences between the various types of schools will enable you to make the best decision for your child. After all, knowledge is power. As a parent it is key that you understand exactly what school you are sending your child to.
What is a grammar school?
A grammar school is a school that has been developed for intellectually gifted children. As part of the entrance process children are expected to take an 11+ exam. This exam will provide insight into the child’s intellectual capabilities, and whether they pass or fail the exam will determine the success of their entrance. Not all grammar schools are privately funded. There can be grammar schools which are funded by the government. It is always best to check with the school directly if there are fees to pay after your child has successfully passed the 11+ exam. Why choose a private school over a grammar school?
Not all private schools require an 11+ exam. Some private schools are specialists in the way they operate. It is true that private schools do not always require a specific grade to be approved for admission. There are still many benefits to private schools, and statistically, the quality of exam results for GCSEs prove that they are just as academically capable. The main benefit of choosing a private school over a grammar school is the fact that your child will not have the stress of an entrance exam. All children have their own skills and for some, exam pressure at such a young age isn’t something they are accustomed to. Choosing a private school provides you with similar, if not more, opportunities than a grammar school. Opening up your options to more choices will provide you with the chance to truly choose the right school for your child. When a child is in an environment where they are allowed to grow, feel comfortable and confident they are able to achieve far more.Independent education at Heathfield Knoll
