The Bluebirds experience at Little Cedars

(18 months–2.5 years)

As toddlers grow in confidence and curiosity, Little Cedars offers the perfect balance of nurturing support and playful challenge. Our space for children aged 18 months to 2.5 years is carefully designed to encourage independence, imagination and early social development.

Strong relationships with key persons

From the start, each child is supported by a consistent key person, helping them feel secure and understood. These trusted relationships give children the confidence to explore and interact more freely with the world around them, while providing parents with key insights into their experiences at nursery.

Imaginative play and themed role play

From home corners with creative setups like beauty salons and dentists to an environment filled with materials children can use to build items, toddlers engage in imaginative role play that supports language development, social skills and emotional awareness.

Loose parts and open-ended resources

Flexible materials like cardboard tubes, boxes and natural objects encourage creative thinking, problem-solving and independent exploration. Making boats, trains or musical shakers gives children ownership over their play.

Adult-initiated activities

Staff thoughtfully plan focused learning experiences to introduce new ideas and guide children toward their next developmental steps — always tailored to the interests and developmental needs of the individual child.

Messy play and sensory experiences

Activities such as painting, water play and sand trays support fine motor skills and cognitive development while giving toddlers the freedom to explore, create and experiment.

Nutritious meals and snacks

A two-course hot lunch is served daily with options including pasta bake, cottage pie and roast chicken with vegetables, along with morning and afternoon healthy snacks of fresh fruit and vegetables. Meals are enjoyed together around the table, promoting healthy eating habits and social interaction.

Nap time and rest routines

For children who still nap, we offer a peaceful space where they can rest after lunch, accompanied by calming music and close supervision. Each child’s routine is respected and gently supported, particularly as they transition into new routines.

Outdoor play and nature walks

Toddlers explore our expansive grounds every day, including forest areas and the outdoor kitchen. Activities include collecting pinecones, making mud pies and bug hunting with magnifying glasses.

Support with early routines

As children grow, we help guide early self-care skills and independence such as handwashing, toileting and dressing with encouragement and positive reinforcement. Parents are kept fully informed and supported throughout this stage.

a word from our parents

Our son was very clingy but the staff were amazing and went above and beyond to make sure he was settled and happy and also to offer us much needed reassurance that he was ok. Thanks to their approach and their kind, caring and empathetic nature, he settled quickly and is loving his nursery journey.

We highly recommend Little Cedars Nursery at Heathfield Knoll, the team are always keen to support our child’s key development stages (such as potty training), there is a wide range of activities with different monthly themes and most importantly our daughter can’t wait to go in every morning
