Outdoor Learning at HK School

Outdoor Learning at HK School Set within 30 acres of mixed woodland in the heart of the Worcestershire countryside, at Heathfield Knoll School we use the nature around us to aid and enhance learning and development. Each week, pupils from Reception up to Year 4 and Connect have a dedicated lesson in the forest and outdoor learning areas. From Year 7 upwards pupils get to join the Orienteering club and then explore the local area through the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Reception pupils have used their time outdoors to learn about the changes around us. They have explored what grows on the school grounds and have learned all about seed dispersal. Year 1 have enjoyed their time in the forest making macramé wall hangings, as well as taking advantage of some fantastic puddles. Playing in the outdoors promotes wellbeing, supports creativity and allows our children to connect with the world around them. At Heathfield Knoll School, outdoor learning is more than just climbing trees and digging holes; cross-curricular links are made allowing us to incorporate other subjects into our outdoor lessons. This term, Year 2 explored mathematics, using 2D and 3D shapes to create their own 3D models. Year 3 brought history alive by creating Viking weaving to go alongside their class topic. Den building is often cited as the favourite activity with years 3 and 4 demonstrating their teamwork skills to build a waterproof shelter, which was duly tested with a bucket of water while they pupil sat inside!
