Embracing the Summer Holidays: Fostering Learning While Keeping the Fun

Summer holidays are finally here, we are well aware of the pressures that parents feel when it comes to summer holidays. Coping with the break can be tricky for many parents, however it’s the perfect opportunity for parents to engage with their children in a relaxed and fun environment.

While summer provides children with the much needed respite from traditional learning environments; summer breaks can also serve as a seamless continuation of learning. Let’s explore some exciting activities and things that promote learning while ensuring your kids have an unforgettable summer.

1. Create a balanced schedule

This will be every parent’s lifeline. Children thrive on routine and parents will need it to rely upon when they are balancing work loads, child care, and keeping the house in relative order. Spontaneity does have its charms, but planning a balanced daily or weekly schedule helps ease your child back into school routines when the summer break is over. Make sure your schedule isn’t too rigid. Keep a mix of learning activities, outdoor play, quiet time, and free time strikes the right balance.

2. Embrace outdoor learning

Summers provide the perfect setting for outdoor learning. Easy outdoor activities like taking your child on a nature walk or to a local park provide a variety of learning opportunities. Talk about plants, animals, or how the weather changes. If possible, throwing in the occasional visit to museums, zoos, or historical sites can be both educational and enjoyable.

3. Host a book club

Book clubs are brilliant activities to get your child reading over the summer. Curate a list of age appropriate books and have them read it over a set amount of time. Come together and have a book club, meet up with their friends, have snacks and summer drinks ready for the club to talk about the book and what they enjoyed. This encourages reading comprehension and critical thinking and could lead to some amazing conversations.

4. Summer science experiments

There are many different science experiments you can do at home using everyday items. You could grow plants from seeds, create a homemade volcano, or make a bird feeder and observe the types of birds that visit. These experiments are not only hands-on activities at the time of creation, but also teach children about scientific concepts as they watch their creations react with the world.

5. Embrace arts and crafts

When all else fails, you can always rely on arts and crafts, these can be both a creative outlet and a practical learning tool. Think about different crafty activities that are engaging for your child. Keep it simple, such as tie-dye shirts, homemade playdough, or start a scrapbooking project. For that extra educational spin, relate the projects to what they’ve learned in the past school year.

6. Cooking and baking

Everyone loves food, and children especially love the results of making their own foods. Cooking and baking are easy ways to incorporate maths and science into everyday activities. Measuring ingredients teaches fractions, and the cooking process can lead to discussions about chemical reactions. Plus, the end result is a delicious treat so who would say no to that?

7. Create a DIY summer camp

Summer camp can be an amazing experience for children, but for those that aren’t ready to spend time away from home, why not run your own DIY summer camp? Make it easy and assign each week a different theme, such as Space Week, Dinosaur Week, or Ocean Week. Make a list of easy activities, crafts, and learning around these themes to help keep things fresh and engaging.

8. Encourage writing

Writing is a skill we often forget about during the summer, so why not have your child keep a summer journal? This is an easy activity and your child can either write about their day, activities they have planned. They could even use their creative brains and write poems, short stories, or doodle in their journal. This helps them maintain their writing skills and provides a creative outlet, while giving you a little peace and quiet.

9. Incorporate digital learning

Screen time is a thing many parents worry about, how much is too much. But with technology evolving as it is we also need to ensure we equip our children with the skills they need to thrive. Look at fun and educational ways you can incorporate digital activities while being present.

10. Relax

Remember, summer is about relaxing, and giving your child a break from constant streams of learning. Be sure to include downtime and moments where there are no plans. Boredom is a great opportunity for your child to think creatively about how to entertain themselves.

Be sure to create a perfect blend of planned activities and downtime to make the most of the summer break.

Our tips and tricks can help you implement easy summer learning to keep your child curious and active while they also enjoy the rest. The summer holiday is just that, a holiday. So don’t pressure yourself too much.
