Year 5 and 6’s PSHCE lessons on democracy

As part of Year 5 and 6’s PSHCE lessons on democracy this half term, we have been looking at elections and the voting system.  Having established an understanding of what democracy is, the children worked together in small parties to identify key political topics which may interest voters.  They then elected leaders and the party wrote a short speech to share with the rest of the class.  Having heard all three speeches, the children were asked to vote for the person they most wanted elected to be an MP.  They registered at the desk, collected their ballot sheets, entered the polling booth, recorded their votes and returned to the ballot box.  After this the votes were counted and one lucky candidate was voted in.  Well done to all of the children for demonstrating such a mature and enthusiastic attitude to the subject of democracy.
