Year 10 raises funds for the Taronga Emergency Bushfire Appeal

Abigail Hodgetts a Year 10 pupil from Heathfield Knoll School and First Steps Day Nursery is raising funds for the Taronga Conservation Society’s Emergency Appeal. While watching the news coverage of the Australian wildfires and the devastating impact it is having on native wildlife, Abigail decided they wanted to support Taronga Conservation Society’s Emergency Appeal. The society needs funds to protect the vulnerable wildlife caught up in the Australian wildfires. This support will not only help the native wildlife recover from this catastrophe event but will help protect the wildlife in the coming months and years to stabilise their habitat. Abigail’s fundraising will be used to support the conservation societies breeding programs and release programmes for the surviving animals back into their restored habitats. The HKS pupil were also shocked to research and find in November 2019 a report stated that the Koala, an Australian icon, was “functionally extinct” due to bushfires burning across New South Wales and Queensland. As of 5th January, Wildlife experts estimate that half a billion mammals, birds, and reptiles have been killed in the fires in recent weeks. There are fears endangered species in sanctuaries like Kangaroo Island, which was also home to 50,000 kangaroos before the fire, have been lost forever. With the death toll of the Koala being closer to 25,000. Abigail Hodgetts is holding a charity raffle at the King and Castle Pub, Severn Valley Railway on Friday 24th January. Tickets are available at the King and Castle and Bewdley Rowing Club. Some fantastic prizes have been donated by local businesses including Venture Photography, Brockencote Hall, Drayton Manor and a signed football from West Bromwich Albion plus many more. The headmaster of HKS, Lawrence Collins has said “We have all been shocked by the devastation of the wildfires in Australia.
