What is a three tier education system – why is it better?

A three-tier education system simply refers to the way the education system has been set up. Instead of there being a larger leap between two schools a child will attend throughout their education, there will be a more gentle assent between three.  Depending on your location you may already have a three-tier system in place. For others, it may be just the primary and secondary education system setup. No matter where you are, school systems can vary and it can be difficult for many parents to wrap their heads around. Each school has its own process and this can either work for you or not at all.  Finding the right school that will benefit your child is the most important aspect when researching the various types of schools available. At Heathfield Knoll, we believe a three-tired system allows a smoother transition from one aspect of education to the next. This means pupils are more settled as they grow and allows the school to understand individual educational needs. At Heathfield Knoll, we believe that a three-tiered system is the best approach to providing a truly tailored education.

What is a three-tier education system?

A three-tier education system breaks down the school years into three core groups. These are Lower School (Reception to Year 4), Middle School (Year 5 – Year 8), and Upper School (Year 9 – Year 11). These three groups make up what is known as a three-tier system.  There are many reasons why a three-tier system is beneficial, as each year a child moves through education their learning and requirements change. Increasing the levels of school segments allows teachers to truly focus on each specific age group. This results in a more accurate teaching and learning experience.  For children, the three-tier system can be most beneficial as, by the time they reach year 6, they may feel too old to be in a primary school with children as young as 4 or 5. This can also be applied to those joining secondary school, being in the same environment as 16-18-year-olds can be overwhelming. A three-tier education system breaks these age groups into more condensed age-appropriate groups.

Lower school:

Lower school typically begins from reception, age 4, up until Year 4. The focus of Lower School is to build the foundation of a child’s education. In Lower School, your child will learn the basics of reading and writing, as well as build their confidence in various subjects. These are some of the most formative years in education for children and great foundations make for the best education in later years.  Lower School is also the stage in which children are exposed to many different topics and experiences. Having the confidence to express themselves and explore these new things is important to their development.

Middle school:

Middle school refers to the middle stages of education, from Year 5 to Year 7. Middle school helps to build on top of the foundations set by Lower School and also continues to prepare them for higher education.  At middle school they will be challenged with other views and topics will be taught in more depth as they continue to grow and develop. Middle school may also be a particularly intense time for children as they begin to develop into teenagers. This means that the way some topics are handled requires a different approach. Having a focus on well-being and mental health will enable them to process and manage the changes they will experience.

Upper school:

Upper School is the final stage of a three-tier school system. This typically starts from Year 8 and will end at Year 11. Here they will have a higher workload, and be expected to conduct themselves in a way that is representative of their age.  During Upper School, pupils will undergo several standardised tests, for example, GCSEs. Having teachers dedicated to this phase in their education will ensure that pupils are able to learn how to navigate their way through.

The Heathfield Knoll way:

Here at Heathfield Knoll we take the three-tier system and enhance it further. As an independent school, we have built on this system to suit our pupils and their ever-changing needs.  Our dedicated Preschool is located near the main building of the Lower School. Here children can see the next stages while still enjoying their preschool experience. Our Lower School (Reception – Year 4), while still separate from the main school, still has visibility of the rest of the school. During break times our lower school will have access to the playground where they can see and interact with older pupils. During their day children will walk the school grounds, this opens up conversations with teachers about the rest of the school. Providing a gentle ascent into the next phase of their education.  Our Middle and Upper School is found on the main grounds, still visible from other parts of the school. Pupils from Year 3 upwards can volunteer to be playground buddies where they will don a high visibility vest and play games with other pupils at the school who may be struggling to make friends. Having interaction with pupils of all ages teaches our pupils patience and understanding.  Our newly developed Sixth Form offers our Year 11s the opportunity to remain on site and continue working with teachers they have already developed a strong level of trust with. In addition to this, they also have a chance to have external tutors in their chosen subjects.  Having our school in one setting enables a truly holistic experience. Children feel safe and are able to anticipate what happens next. This is why at Heathfield Knoll we are able to introduce a variety of experiences and classes from a young age; such as, foreign languages, music classes, drama, and more.
