VE Day: A Celebration of Peace and Unity

Introduction

On Friday, 27th June 2025, we celebrated Founder’s Day. This signifies more than 600 years of learning, friendship, and community at Heathfield Knoll School. This was a moment to reflect on our rich history, honour those who shaped our path, and look forward with hope and togetherness.

VE Day: A Celebration of Peace and Unity

VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the end of the Second World War in Europe on 8 May 1945. On that day, millions across Britain and the world rejoiced, celebrating the end of nearly six years of war and hardship. Streets were filled with singing, dancing, and the lighting of bonfires and beacons—symbols of hope, relief, and a new beginning. Communities came together for street parties, Thanksgiving services, and moments of reflection, united in gratitude for peace and mindful of the sacrifices that made it possible.

VE Day was particularly recognised this year as it has been 80 years since the first VE Day in 1945. Some of you may have seen the celebrations on TV or taken part in a picnic or street party where you live. 

Lamp Lights of Peace

Throughout the UK, lamp lights of peace and beacons are lit on significant anniversaries like VE Day. They serve as powerful symbols of hope and remembrance. 

These lights recall the joy of peace after conflict and honour the millions who sacrificed their lives for freedom. The lamp lights are more than flames—they are messages passed from generation to generation, reminding us that from the darkness of war, the light of peace and togetherness can shine.

Remembering the Old Wolvernians

As we light our lamp of peace, let us remember those who walked before us—our founder, our teachers, our friends, and especially those past pupils or Old Wolvernians who gave their all in times of war. Their courage and sacrifice are part of our school’s history. 

We remember and honour those we have learnt more about today by being peacemakers in our schools, homes and communities. 

Peace begins with each of us. Just as our founder William Sebright lit the torch of learning centuries ago, we are called to carry the light of kindness, courage, and understanding.
