Music education has been a pillar of education for many generations and holds more importance for development than many people realise. Children are naturally drawn to music, and using this as a way to help develop their skills and cognitive abilities is a brilliant way to teach subconsciously.  Music education can be far more engaging than more academic subjects that are taught in a traditional setting. Music is something which people are naturally drawn to, and this can be a way to build confidence and other skills in young children.

What is music education?

Music education is the practice of teaching all aspects that are involved in the production and creation of music.  Music education explores sound sources, sonority, rhythms, patterns, sequences, melodies, different musical styles and cultures, active listening and motor coordination through a spiral curriculum and the integration of performing, listening and appraising skills. A child can have access to learning a new skill with a robust music education.  Music education also includes the learning of reading and writing music. Learning to read music helps children understand the way a melody is created, it is a visual structure on how different layers of music works and creates harmony. Being able to read music allows children to then write their own and collaborate with others to create a composition as a group. Writing music in music education is a fantastic way to exercise creativity, building the blocks to create a composition teaches collaboration as well as understanding.  The earlier children begin their music education the more benefits it can have. From developmental aspects, as well as social development; music education reaches more than just learning to play a musical instrument.

The benefits of music education:

There are many benefits of music education, for example, music brings people together and helps build an emotional connection. Music has a way to communicate with people when words fail. Using this to our advantage we are able to understand people in a far greater sense through our music education. Music is able to stimulate parts of the brain which can help with pain relief, reducing stress as well as improving memory, which can aid older pupils with revision preparation and exams. Playing relaxing music has been shown to reduce blood pressure and heart rates after a form of physical movement according to studies from Harvard University. There are also many times where music has brought people together, even families with loved ones suffering from dementia. A shared love of music spans across more than just the creation of music itself.  Music education is an amazing creative outlet. From all around the world music can be shared and used to connect people.

Benefits of music education for primary school children:

Beyond the overall benefits of music education, there are many additional benefits for music education in primary school children. Music is an outlet which can help young children learn and navigate the world around them through actions in conjunction with this art form.  While a younger child’s vocabulary is limited as they are still learning to communicate, music education has no limitations. Children are able to express themselves through music and movement. Music education can help them gain confidence in their abilities to communicate, and can also help them self regulate their emotions. Having an external source in which they can use to take their mind off of any stresses or worries can be beneficial.  There are additional benefits which are more physical. Such as the development of motor skills as children use their hands and bodies to learn a new instrument. Many instruments require deft fingers and these movements help to build strength and muscle memory.  Music education can help children develop and define their listening skills as they learn to listen to changes in tempo and pitch. They will refine their skills as they are encouraged to pick out specific instruments in compositions. Through this they are able to learn and understand cause and effect. As a piece of music progresses they can learn to identify the instrument’s effects on a particular composition.

The importance of music education in primary school

Music education in primary school is more important than many realise. Being exposed to different cultures and genres of music in their education helps build on their ever developing social skills. How music education supports overall learning and development in primary school children

Music education can help support children in their overall learning and development. From helping build their motor skills, to communicating with others, [need anotherexample] the benefits are endless. Music education is a tool that can be used to help children learn and understand the world around them, helping them think independently and critically as they have experienced other cultures through music.  Music education reaches many learning domains, such as the psychomotor domain, which develops skills. The cognitive domain, is how children learn and acquire knowledge. Most important is the affective domain, which influences the learner’s ability and willingness to receive, internalise and share what they have learned. Working with music is able to reach a combination of these aspects, which in turn help form the building blocks of other areas in their learning.  Many subjects can use music education to help increase a topic’s memorability. Many people are able to maintain knowledge of music and song for longer periods of time than when reading or listening. Using this to the advantage of educators is another way in which music education can be beneficial for overall learning and development.

Methods of teaching music education:

There are many methods and ways that music education can be taught.

Orff Schulwerk Method of teaching music education

The Orff Schulwerk Method, is a way of teaching music via a combination of singing, dancing, and acting. A variety of percussion instruments are used and lessons are more focused around learning through play.

Kodaly method of teaching music education

The Kodaly method focuses on the principle of music education being more effective from an earlier age. This theory is that everyone is capable of learning music when it is introduced early enough. This philosophy of music education builds on each lesson, and uses what was previously taught and elaborates on that block. A large focus on singing is placed during this method, combined with visual aids to help children notice the changes in pitch.

Suzuki method if teaching music education

The Suzuki method is a more recent approach and replicates the same process we use to learn and teach languages. This approach focuses on listening and repeating a sequence or process. With this method parental involvement is key to help children remain motivated to learn and continue.

Dalcroze method of teaching music education

The Dalcroze method is an approach used to teach musical concepts. This form of musical education starts with listening, or ear training. This music education approach was developed to teach rhythm, structure, and musical expression and movement.  There are many ways in which music education can be taught. An individual approach may be best, afterall no two children learn exactly the same. Understanding a child’s individual learning style can help provide a more acute approach to teaching music education. Encouraging a love of learning should always be the focus in any educational setting.
